What to do with all the halloween candy you have at your house?
10 years ago, my first born son started trick or treating. Actually, my sister held him in his froggy outfit and I held his candy bag. He wasn’t even 1. He didn’t know what he was doing but we did. My sister and I along with my brother collected the candy pretending it was for Geo. My faves were: twix and tootsie rolls. Then we ate the candy for days and days.
The tradition continued and Geo was getting older but now he started eating the candy. In 2011, things changed. We became a healthier family so we couldn’t possibly eat all this candy. But the kids love dressing up and trick or treating. Something had to be done. But what can be done? I can’t just tell the kids you can’t eat that and I’m gonna throw it away.
One day, while carpooling with a teacher to work I was complaining about the candy. I can’t let the kids eat all this candy. What am I gonna do with it? She told me about THE SWITCH WITCH.
The SWITCH WITCH? What does she do? I wanna meet her in person. Who is this switch witch who’s gonna save my life and my kids lives from the processed sugar?
Apparently, the switch witch is like a tooth fairy. She comes in the middle of the night after everyone sleeps. She takes the candy and leaves the kids money or toys. GENIUS!
Mom…shhhhh the switch witch is you. Don’t tell the kids that.
Here’s what to do:
1- Tell the kids that the switch witch comes at night so we have to leave the bucket full of candy by the door for her. The witch takes the candy and leaves money. The more candy, the more money so you can only eat one piece that’s it.
2- Kids are fast asleep. ok fine you can pick two of your favorite and eat them before the switching happens.
3- Put the candy away and put money or toys instead. Whatever you guys agreed on.
You can do the following with the candy:
- throw it away in the trash ( this is what I do and I have no shame in this)
- donate it-I believe a friend told me that some candy gets donated to the troops overseas
- take it to work and your co-workers will take care of it
I throw it away because if I don’t give something to my children to eat, I can’t give to other adults or children for that matter.
